Architecture & Interiors · Mumbai
Buildings that breathe with the city.
Azhar Architecture is a Mumbai studio designing homes, workplaces and public spaces shaped by light, climate and the way people actually live.
The studio
We design from the inside out, starting with how a space should feel.
Before form, before style, we ask how light should fall in the morning, where a breeze will cross a room and how a family or a team will move through a day. The answers shape the plan, and the plan shapes the building.
We are a principal-led practice. The people you meet at the first conversation stay with your project through every drawing and every site visit, working closely with engineers, consultants and the craftspeople who build it.
Climate first
Orientation, shade and cross ventilation are the first design decisions, not an afterthought. Comfort should come from the building itself.
Honest materials
Stone, lime, timber, brick and concrete used for what they are. Materials chosen to age gracefully and to suit their place.
Crafted detail
The quality of a building lives in its joints, edges and handles. We draw them carefully and see them built properly.
Practice
One studio, every scale.
From a single room to a group of buildings, we work across disciplines so that architecture, interiors and landscape are designed as one continuous idea.
- 01
Architecture
New buildings from first sketch to completion: private residences, apartment buildings, villas, workplaces and hospitality. Every plan starts with orientation, daylight and air movement.
- 02
Interior Architecture
Interiors conceived as architecture, not decoration. Spatial planning, joinery, lighting and material palettes designed together so a space holds up to daily life.
- 03
Landscape & Outdoor Rooms
Courtyards, terraces, gardens and the threshold spaces in between. Native planting, shade and water that make outdoor living comfortable through the year.
- 04
Adaptive Reuse & Restoration
Giving existing buildings a second life. We study what is there, keep what is worth keeping and add what the building now needs, with care for its history.
- 05
Masterplanning
Site strategy for campuses, layouts and multi-building developments. Movement, open space, phasing and climate studied before any single building is drawn.
Designing for Mumbai
A city of monsoon, sea and density.
Good architecture belongs to its place. Mumbai asks for buildings that handle heavy rain, steady heat, salty air and tight plots, and still feel generous inside. These conditions are where our design begins.
Built for the monsoon
Over two metres of rain arrives in a few months. Pitched and overhanging roofs, protected openings and detailing that sheds water are designed in from day one.
Shade before cooling
Deep verandahs, screens and thick walls keep heat out so that air conditioning becomes a choice, not a necessity.
Made for sea air
Salt and humidity are hard on buildings. We choose materials and finishes that age well by the coast and stay easy to maintain.
Room to breathe in a dense city
Courtyards, light wells and cross ventilation bring daylight and air into tight urban plots without giving up privacy.
Process
Clear steps, no surprises.
A well run project is a calm one. Each stage ends with a clear set of decisions, drawings and costs, so you always know where things stand.
Listen
We begin with conversations, not drawings. How you live or work, what you love about the places you know, what the budget and timeline really are.
Read the site
Sun paths, prevailing winds, views, neighbours, soil and regulations. The site sets the first rules of the design.
Concept
Sketches, models and early studies that test a few clear ideas. We choose one direction together before going further.
Design development
Plans, sections, materials and details refined with structural and services consultants, with cost checked at every stage.
Drawings & approvals
Complete construction drawings, specifications and the documentation needed for statutory approvals.
On site
Regular site visits, mock-ups and close work with contractors and craftspeople until the last detail is in place.
Work
Selected work, coming soon.
We are photographing and documenting our projects properly before publishing them here.
To see our work in the meantime, ask us for the studio portfolio and we will send it across.
